📍 Hot, sultry weather in Tajikistan
In recent years, summer in Tajikistan has become abnormally hot: the temperature in July-August rises to +40…+45°C.
🌡 This is several degrees higher than the climatic norm.
⚠️ Heat leads to overheating of the soil, buildings and structures, increased evaporation and a decrease in the water level in rivers.
📍 Drought - a hidden threat
Drought in Tajikistan is not only the lack of rain.
💧 It manifests itself in:
• a decrease in river flow (Amu Darya, Vakhsh, Panj),
• a decrease in the level of groundwater,
• a decrease in the yield of wheat, cotton, vegetables.
📉 In dry years, harvests can fall by 20-30%.
📍 Impact on agriculture
Agriculture is the basis of life for 70% of the country's population.
🌱 Drought affects:
• pastures (animals lose feed),
• gardens and vineyards (less fruit),
• cotton fields (main export),
• vegetables and melons (reduction and loss of yield).
👩🌾 Farmers are forced to save water, but this reduces the quality and quantity of products.
📍 Water and energy
Tajikistan is a country of rivers and glaciers.
But heat and drought lead to:
• accelerated melting of glaciers,
• reduction in fresh water reserves,
• drop in reservoir levels.
⚡ This also affects hydroelectric power plants, which provide more than 90% of the country's electricity and power outages.
📍 Social consequences
Drought and high temperatures are not only about the climate.
👨👩👧 People are faced with:
• drinking water shortages,
• power outages and power outages,
• rising food prices,
• deteriorating health (worsening of cardiovascular and respiratory diseases).
📍What can be done?
To reduce damage from heat and drought:
✔️ implement drip irrigation and water-saving technologies,
✔️ grow drought-resistant crops,
✔️ develop weather forecasting and early warning systems,
✔️ raise public awareness of adaptation measures,
✔️ do not stay in the sun without a hat and sunglasses,
✔️ try not to go outside during the hours of the highest temperature from 11.30 to 16.00.
