Migration in Tajikistan: Challenges and Opportunities

None

30.05.2025

Labor migration plays an important role in the economy and social life of Tajikistan. It is estimated that hundreds of thousands of Tajiks travel abroad every year, mainly to Russia, in search of work. Migrant remittances make up a significant portion of the country's GDP and support the well-being of thousands of families.

However, upon returning home, migrants face a number of challenges:
🔸 Lack of stable jobs;
🔸 Lack of business skills;
🔸 Limited access to finance;
🔸 Problems with social adaptation.

However, the return of migrants is not only a challenge, but also an opportunity for development. Many of them return with new experience, knowledge, and a desire to start something of their own.

What can migrants do upon their return?

Small business:
Experience gained abroad helps to open your own business: shops, cafes, construction teams, car repair shops, etc.

Agriculture:
Agricultural production remains an important sector. State and international programs support farmers with subsidies and training.

Professional services:
Migrants with skills in construction, equipment repair, welding, or driving can offer services at the local level.

Training and mentoring:
Returned migrants can share their experience, teach young people professions or foreign languages.

Participation in support programs:
In Tajikistan, programs are being implemented to help repatriates: microloans, trainings, courses on entrepreneurship and legal protection.

The PO "Bonuvoni Fardo" is implementing the project "Assistance to the development of border regions of southern Khatlon", which is aimed at improving the quality of life of women and young people from migrant families. The project is funded by the European Union under the BOMCA 10 grant scheme.

The BOMCA 10 programme is implemented by a consortium of border management agencies of selected EU Member States and the ICMPD, led by the State Border Guard of the Republic of Latvia.
